NEWIES 2.00
A product of the MORONIHAH BBS.
(c) 1993-94 Bradley W. Hodges
DISCLAIMER:
Thank you for taking the time to download and try "NEWIES."
A lot of hard work went in to this project, and although
it may not seem much, it is a major accomplishment for me. Before
going any further I would like to make clear some legal stuff.
I, Bradley W. Hodges, the author of this product shall and in
no way be held liable for any damage that may occur to your
computer system, disk, printer, or any other product that this
software may run on. IT IS RUN AT YOUR OWN RISK. By running this
software you agree to accept this responsibility, and any other
responsibilities forthcoming.

tampered with, back engineered, or otherwise altered. This documentation
is also copyrighted and may not be altered in anyway. You are free however
to print a copy of all documentation for your personal use only.
INTRODUCTION:
NEWIES is a Bulletin Board System Newsletter bulletin maker.
It takes simple ASCII files and converts them into an attractive
format. NEWIES was primarily developed to fill the gap that I saw in
other Shareware/Freeware program. It is user friendly, and a snap to
operate.
SETUP:
To set up NEWIES create a directory off of your BBS home
directory and name it NEWIES. (Or if you prefer you can place
NEWIES anywhere that is best for your needs.) Once you have created
the directory place the FILES in to it.
When you receive NEWIES you should have the following files:
NEWIES.EXE Main program
NEWIES.DOC This documentation
REGISTER.TXT Registration documentation
MORONIHA.ADS Moronihah BBS promotion
FILE_ID.DIZ File Description file
REPORT.BUG Bug report on NEWIES
VERSION.HIS Version History Report
WHATS.NEW New features of NEWIES
If any of these files are missing, Please call the MORONIHAH
BBS at (205) 238-1246 to obtain a complete package. You may also FREQ
the lastest release under the magic name of NEWIES at FIDO 1:3657/5.
After you have verified that you have a complete NEWIES file
package you are ready to begin. At the DOS prompt type the
following:
NEWIES CONFIG
You will then be lead through a number of questions for
setting up NEWIES to your own personal tastes. They are:
Do you wish to REGISTER? (ENTER "YES" if you wish to do so.)
This is used at the time you register your copy of NEWIES.
If you are not registering just hit the RETURN key to
continue.
What is your name:
At this prompt type your name as you would want it to
appear in the bulletins that NEWIES will create.
(You will not be asked this quesiton when you register.)
What is the name of your BBS:
Enter the name of your BBS as you would like it to appear
in the bulletins that NEWIES will create. (You will not be
asked this question when you register.)
Where is your BBS DISPLAY directory (Example C:\SF\DISPLAY)?
Enter the drive, path were your want your Display/Bulletin
to go.
Are you using a SpitFire BBS? (Y/N)
When NEWIES was first written is was designed to run on a
SPITFIRE BBS. However under the urging of several users I
have decided to offer the features to other BBS operators.
If you run another BBS software package other than SPITFIRE
then answer "N" otherwise answer "Y".
Do you wish NEWIES to create SFNWSLTR.CLR and SFNWSTLR.BBS?
(ONLY AVAILABLE FOR SPITFIRE USERS)
Answer "Y" for yes or "N" for no. If you choose yes then
NEWIES will ask:
Place SFNWSLTR into (drive/path)?
Drive and path will be the same as the that for the
NEWS Bulletins. If you answer "Y" SFNWSLTR will be
placed in this directory. If you answer "N" you will
be asked:
Where do you wish to place SFNWSLTR (drive/path)?
Enter the full drive & path were you which SFNWSLTR
to be placed. e.g. C:\SYSOP
Do you wish to create a Mono and Color Bulletin?
(NON-SPITFIRE USERS MUST ANSWER THIS!)
Answer "Y" for yes or "N" for no. If you choose yes then
NEWIES will ask:
The name of your Mono NEWS Bulletin:
Enter the name of the ASCII NEWS bulletin you want
produced. For example: ALL.BBS
The name of your Color NEWS Bulletin:
Enter the name of the ASCII NEWS bulletin you want
produced. For example: ALL.CLR
After answering these questions NEWIES will display the
information that you have entered and ask you if it is correct. If
it is, just answer "Y", otherwise NEWIES will begin again asking you
for each item of information you wish to correct.
Entering "Y" at "Is this Correct?" prompt you will then be
shown a color bar. Underneath the bar will be numbers from 0 to 15.
You will then be asked:
Which color would you like for a Subject box?
Just enter the number that matches the color you want and
press return.
Which color would you like for your Subject text?
Just enter the number that matches the color you want and
press return.
Which color would you like for your border?
Just enter the number that matches the color you want and
press return.
Which color would you like for your text?
Just enter the number that matches the color you want and
press return.
If you ARE NOT using a SPITFIRE BBS then you will be asked the
following additional questions:
What is the code to CLEAR the BBS screen (For example
some BBS software uses the @CLS@ command)?
Enter the code that is used to CLEAR your BBS screen.
What is the code to INHIBIT the more prompt on your BBS?
Enter the code that INHIBITS the MORE PROMPT.
What is the code to ENABLE the more prompt on your BBS?
Enter the code that ENABLES the MORE PROMPT.
What is the code to PAUSE the BBS screen?
Enter the code that PAUSES the screen.
NOTE: If none of these apply just hit return to go to the next
question.
You will then be asked to press the enter key to continue.
Press the enter key when you wish to proceed.
After pressing the enter key you will be show a graphic
representation of what your color bulletin will look like. You then
will be asked:
Would you like to change this?
If you don't like the colors you've chosen then enter "Y"
otherwise enter "N". If you press "Y" you will be
returned to the color bar and asked to make your choices
again. Do this as often as you like, until you get the
desired effect.
If you entered "N" then the Setup process is complete and
NEWIES will create a file entitled "NEWIES.CFG" Please make sure
this file is created in the same directory that your NEWIES.EXE
file is at. NEWIES WILL NOT work without the NEWIES.CFG file.
RUNNING NEWIES:
Running NEWIES is very simple. With your favorite ASCII editor
create a text file with the NEWS information you wish to put out.
The first line of the text file must contain the subject only.
(PLEASE KEEP THE SUBJECT SHORT AND TO THE POINT. Anything larger
than normal and NEWIES may create Bulletins with unpredictable
results.) For example:
NEWIES IS HERE!
The Moronihah BBS has just announced the release of NEWIES. A
new NEWS bulletin generator for all SpitFire BBS. NEWIES will also
work on any other BBS that uses ASCII / ANSI generated screens.
Save this text file into the NEWIES directory and then at the
DOS prompt just type:
(IMPORTANT NOTICE: The text file you have created must be placed in
the NEWIES directory or NEWIES will not work.)
NEWIES (Name of your news file)
For example lets say we saved a text file and named it NEWS.TXT.
At the prompt you would type:
NEWIES NEWS.TXT
NEWIES will then begin to process the file and in a few
seconds NEWIES will report the file is done.
(ADDED FEATURE)
I have been ask by several user to add a command line opition to
automatically delete the old News bulletins. This in now done with
the "/A" on the command line. For example, if I want to create a
newsletter and the text file was named NEWS.TXT and I also wanted
NEWIES to delete the old one other than append it I would enter at
the command prompt:
NEWIES NEWS.TXT/A
NEWIES will then delete the old News bulletin and create a new one
other than append the new one to the old News bulletin. The command
line feature of "/A" may be either upper or lower case.
THAT'S IT! Real easy I hope.
BUGS & SUGGESTIONS:
